Listen to Track 3

This recording brings together one of the world's most famous vocal ensembles with one of the world's most important music manuscripts (MS Canon. Misc. 213), a collection of mainly fifteenth-century vocal music from the Bodleian library in Oxford.
The HILLIARD ENSEMBLE are the perfect medium for this music, with their experience of music new and old (including their mould-breaking work with saxophonist Jan GARBAREK).
Their quality of sound and commitment to the gentle but passionate music of these early 15th century songs have produced a recording experience which would be hard to match anywhere.
The songs deal in a timeless way with the universal theme of love, both the ultra-serious and high-brow to more prosaic expressions of yearning, hope and longing, and give us the essence of the intellectual and musical artistry of secular music in the early 15th century.
On "Sweet Love, Sweet Hope", medieval French lyrics, the fine acoustics of an Oxford college chapel, and the incomparably beautiful tones of the HILLIARD ENSEMBLE combine in music of ecstatic feeling and sensuality.
