The basic line-up of MACANDE is four musicians on vocals, percussion and guitar. On this, their first CD, they are joined by a host of guest musicians. Flamenco is the essential spirit of their music and many of the songs are based on the rhythms of traditional flamenco - tanguillo, buleria, fandango - but all the compositions and lyrics are their own and all have new, non-traditional arrangements and instrumentation. And the songs are influenced not only by flamenco, but also by other musical styles - salsa, jazz, funk and more. So MACANDE respect the traditional canvas of Spanish music, but enrich it by using musicians and musical ideas from other genres which widen and deepen their art. This wide musical approach coupled with the sensibility and originality of the lyrics, give us MACANDE's own take on the infinite facettes and depth of the age-old musical culture that is flamenco. MACANDE's original lyrics, compositions and use of a multitude of musical ideas, instruments and arrangements, give an undeniable originality and freshness to their music - while at the same time respecting and enhancing the flamenco tradition - and place MACANDE at the forefront of new Spanish, and World, music.
